- Correspondence data. We may process information relating to any communication you send us (“correspondence data”), including its content and associated metadata. We use it to communicate with you and to keep records. The legal basis for this processing is your consent and, in some cases, our legitimate interests, namely the proper administration of our website and business and the investigation of any disputes.
- Device data. We may process information about your use of our website and about your device (“device data”) while you browse. Device data may include your IP address, general location, browser type and version, operating system, device type and screen resolution, your precise location (only if you choose to share it), and information about how you use our website, such as the referral source, length of visit, page views, navigation paths and the timing, frequency and pattern of your visits. We collect this data through cookies and similar technologies. We use it to improve the website, set default options, understand how the website is used and keep it secure. The legal basis for this processing is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected for, and in any case no longer than:
- messaging data: 2 (two) years after you give your consent, unless you withdraw your consent earlier;
- correspondence data: 6 (six) months after the communication ends, unless you withdraw your consent earlier;
- device data: 2 (two) years after you give your consent, unless you withdraw your consent earlier.
At the end of the applicable retention period, or at your request, personal data is permanently deleted.
Notwithstanding the above, we may keep your personal data where this is necessary to comply with a legal obligation that applies to us.
Your rights
Your main rights under data protection law are:
- the right to be informed about the processing of your personal data;
- the right to access your data;
- the right to rectification;
- the right to erasure of your personal data;
- the right to restrict the processing of your personal data;
- the right to object to the processing of your personal data;
- the right to data portability;
- the right to complain to a supervisory authority;
- the right to withdraw consent; and
- the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling.
The right to access data. You have the right to confirmation of whether we process your personal data and, where we do, to access that data together with certain additional information, including the purposes of the processing, the categories of personal data concerned and the recipients of the data. Provided the rights and freedoms of others are not affected, we will give you a copy of your personal data.
The right to rectification. You have the right to have any inaccurate personal data about you corrected and, taking into account the purposes of the processing, to have any incomplete personal data about you completed.
The right to erasure. In some circumstances you have the right to have your personal data erased. These include when: (i) the data is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected or processed; (ii) you withdraw consent to consent-based processing and there is no other legal basis for the processing; (iii) you object to the processing under the applicable data protection laws; (iv) the processing is for direct marketing purposes; or (v) the data has been unlawfully processed. There are exceptions to this right, including when processing is necessary: (i) to exercise the right of freedom of expression and information; (ii) to comply with a legal obligation; or (iii) to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
The right to restrict processing. In some circumstances you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data, namely when: (i) you contest the accuracy of the data; (ii) the processing is unlawful but you oppose erasure; (iii) we no longer need the data for our purposes, but you need it to establish, exercise or defend legal claims; or (iv) you have objected to the processing, pending verification of that objection. Where processing is restricted on this basis, we may continue to store your data, but we will only otherwise process it: (i) with your consent; (ii) to establish, exercise or defend legal claims; (iii) to protect the rights of another person; or (iv) for reasons of important public interest.
The right to object. You have the right to object to our processing of your personal data on grounds relating to your particular situation, but only where the legal basis for the processing is that it is necessary for a task carried out in the public interest or for the legitimate interests pursued by us or a third party. If you object, we will stop processing the data unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests, rights and freedoms, or the processing is for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims.
You have the right to object to our processing of your personal data for direct marketing purposes, including profiling for direct marketing. If you object, we will stop processing your data for this purpose.
You have the right to object to our processing of your personal data for scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes on grounds relating to your particular situation, unless the processing is necessary for a task carried out for reasons of public interest.
The right to data portability. Where the legal basis for our processing of your personal data is (i) your consent, or (ii) the performance of a contract or steps taken at your request before entering into a contract, you have the right to receive your personal data from us in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format. This right does not apply where it would adversely affect the rights and freedoms of others.
The right to complain. If you believe that our processing of your personal data breaches data protection laws, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority responsible for data protection. In the EU, you may do so in the member state of your habitual residence, your place of work or the place of the alleged breach.
The right to withdraw consent. Where the legal basis for our processing of your personal data is consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal.
Automated decisions. You have the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, that produces legal effects concerning you or similarly significantly affects you. There are exceptions, including when the decision: (i) is necessary for entering into, or performing, a contract between you and us; (ii) is authorized by EU or member state law that applies to us and that lays down suitable measures to safeguard your rights, freedoms and legitimate interests; or (iii) is based on your explicit consent.
You can exercise any of the rights described here by emailing us at hello@healthsciencemag.com. We will respond within one month of receiving your request. For complex or multiple requests, this may be extended by up to two months, in which case we will let you know.
